Poplar

Cultural & Mythic Significance

Poplar is a close relative to the Aspen tree which is part of the Willow family. These were introduced to the British Isles a long time ago and is one of their oldest native species of tree. These trembling trees are strongly associated in Celtic traditions with the Sabbat of Samhain due to their use in spellwork to alleviate fears, initiate controlled contact with underworld spirits, and contacting the beloved dead.

In Ireland, Aspen/Poplar rods were considered a respectful and sacred tree for use in the delicate task of measuring the bodies of the dead for coffins. Wales found this the opposite, and often considered Aspen/Poplar cursed for its association. However its use goes even further back, as early as 3000 BC in its use in golden headdresses and crowns to be placed upon the dead in their burial mounds in Mesopotamia.

Magical Qualities

Magically, Poplar/Aspen is related to thresholds and shielding and building confidence. It will give you opportunities to increase your capacity to hear from the spirit world.
